I'm never surprised by what certain fans will be drawn to. I think that every character on our show represents something different and touches people in different ways. It's like a piece of art or music. You can look at something and it can move one person, really speak to them. Then, the person standing next to them may be, "Ehhh. Can we go get some lunch?" So I never underestimate what may affect somebody.
"I was at the gas station," she recalls, grinning at the memory. "I had the pump in there. I was cleaning the windshield and I was also on [my cell] phone. So, the gas was pumping and this couple walked by. The girl turned her head and went [makes a gasping noise], then beelined straight for me, arms open! She just grabbed me and held me and hugged me and said, 'I love you! It's Carly! Oh, I love you! I think you're so great! Oh, my gosh, Sonny and Carly are the best!' And I was like, 'Omigod, thanks!' I said, 'Hold on' to the person I was talking to on the phone [laughs]! But I think that's when I realized, 'Oh, okay, I guess this has become something.' “
I remember being at this party and I had four different guys come up to me and whisper in my ear, basically saying, "I love you on that show. Just don't tell anybody that I watch."
Oh, the fans are amazing. I had no idea how many people [the show] touches.
Q: I’m 11 years old and I live in
A: I am glad to hear that you watch only when the homework is complete—school is very important. I hope to be in
I had a few nasty letters in the beginning but I haven't had anything since [then]. I have always had great support from people, and I completely appreciate that support.
When I started here I got all kinds of mail saying, "I'm never going to like you," and then when I started, "You suck." I've gotten letters from those same people now apologizing and saying that they were wrong. They wanted to hate me, but they love me and they love what I've done with the character. Those letters mean a lot. To have created a fan out of someone who definitely was not going to be supportive is a great feeling!
I have been getting such great, such great mail from people. Everyone is saying that they didn't think they could accept another Carly. After giving me a chance, they really like what I'm doing. They know there's a difference, but they never thought they could, but they really are enjoying it. Some people are saying, "We weren't huge fans, but we really like it. We've been won over." That's really a compliment when they've been won over.
I have gotten beautiful letters from people saying they didn't think they could accept me, but they do. I feel like I really have passed the test. It makes me so happy that I’m making people experience things in their own lives through what’s going on on-screen.
To touch somebody, give them a hug, to share humanness with people, those are the amazing experiences I would have never had without this job.
There was hate mail waiting for me when I got there, there was ONE nice letter saying welcome the rest was hate mail. And I was just like okay well I understand it means they really loved who was there first and I got some along the way. Then about three four months later I received all this mail from different people saying, 'I'm so sorry I wrote you a really nasty letter in the beginning and I was wrong'.
I love the fans. The fans are insanely wonderful and passionate and devoted. They’re so supportive. I would love these people as my parents you know because there’s always a reason to celebrate with them. Its fun!
I don’t think there’s anything like a soap fan.
Let me tell you something about the fans. I have the most incredible fans. They are loving. They are caring. They are supportive, and they want what is best for me and for Carly. It's very odd to be in a room with 200 people who love what you do and voice it. It's an incredible and overwhelmingly wonderful feeling. I cannot thank the fans enough for everything they do for me. I'm so deeply touched by the outpouring of support. I just want to say thank you to them
